Together, the Bacon Lane Architect LLC / Shoot Indoors team developed 4 innovative design approaches which have been implemented within existing structures, the most recent still under construction in the States Area. In one instance the team was tasked with creating conceptual designs to be implemented out of state through local professionals. The most recent completed facility is in downtown States.

The downtown States facility is 9,690 square feet with 4,200 square feet dedicated to shooting lanes. The facility employs state-of-the-art range equipment with digital imaging focused on the target down range, enabling targets to be viewed without constant automated retrieval. The range mechanical system is a 100 percent fresh air system with 105 percent exhaust at the target end to mitigate the potential for inhalation of contaminants off the firing line.

Another innovative feature is the use of high strength steel angled baffles over the shooting area and lanes, designed to eliminate any path of ballistic travel that might destroy or exit the envelope. This allows the baffles to span from the “Building with a Building” walls, eliminating the need to be suspended from the existing roof structure, without having to modify the building envelope.

ArcWest Partner, Todd Heirls is speaking alongside Shoot Indoors founder, Bryan Stear, at the 2023 NSSF Range-Retailer Business Expo (Firearm Industry Trade Association) in July 2023. Their presentation is titled “Indoor Range Construction: Top Ten Things You Need to Know.”

This project re-developed the site to its maximum developable area providing a valuable asset to the community as well as closure in the urban storefront along the corridor. The first floor off of the walkable corridor is occupied by rentable commercial space.

The total design gross area of the building is 86,057 sf, with 59,616 sf net rentable area to the self storage function. The commercial grade level space occupies 2,640 square feet of the shop front area and includes the business offices for the storage component.

The project was first conceived starting July 2015. The site development process and construction started October 2017. Substantial completion was achieved July 2019.

The facility, which was completed and opened in late 2016, sits on 6.3 acre elevated site between an Interstate and a major commuter route, and features a combination of interior climate controlled storage and exterior drive up storage.

The main climate controlled building is built into the side of the hill with a three story portion of the structure facing the access point of the site and connected two story structure extending the 2^nd and 3^rd stories to the back of the site. The structure consists of approximately 66,040 square feet divided among three stories, offering a total of 533 storage units. 17 of the units are drive up accessible via the second level due to site topography.

The building is constructed of light gauge steel framing, with steel and concrete composite decks. The building envelope is a combination of masonry and insulated metal skin. On the interior, the framing and partitioning system is configured on a regular 5’ x 10’ module allowing limited future reconfiguration based on sales demographics.

The remainder of the site was planned for an initial 7 drive up structures accounting for 35,170 square feet and 198 individual storage units. The site allowed for an additional three drive up buildings to be constructed prior to occupancy, expanding the overall square footage and unit capacity beyond the initial planned amount.

The three-story, 109,440 sf, climate controlled facility was designed to showcase both security and the storage product. The building is constructed of light gauge steel framing, with steel and concrete composite decks. The building envelope is a combination of masonry and insulated metal skin. On the interior, the framing and partitioning system is configured on a regular 5’ x 10’ module, allowing limited future reconfiguration based on sales demographics.

The facility houses a total of 873 discrete rental units, ranging from 25 sf up to 300 sf. 38 of the first floor units offer drive up access. The 2.3 acre site is fenced and provides gated security for the drive up storage units.

Each commercial space will have frontage on 118th Avenue with dock access along the back elevation. The design team is maximizing the unique aspects of engineered building components to create a distinctive architectural image.
