Bacon Lane Architect LLC was hired to provide architectural design services for Pilothouse Brewing Company, a new local brewery and taproom that opened in Aurora in June 2018.

The taproom and outdoor patio were designed with a nautical theme, drawing their design inspiration from the founder’s love of sailing and the sights of coastal New England, from Newport, Rhode Island to Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The taproom features a sailing yacht’s binnacle (sailboat steering wheel, pedestal, compass, guard with cup holder for glassware, and fold-out teak table with cushioned bench-style seating around it) for patrons to enjoy. The leased space is 2,340 square feet with a 750 square foot outdoor patio.

Pilothouse Brewing is located in the Quincy Place Shopping Center at South Buckley and Quincy Roads in Aurora. The taproom includes up to 32 tap handles for both the ‘pilot’ recipes of amateur brewers and their own ‘house’ crafted beers.

Bacon Lane Architect LLC Architects worked with the owner of an existing office building in Thornton to provide architecture and interior design services to accommodate a new major tenant.

The former USWEST/Qwest building at 12121 Grant Street was becoming the new home for Avaya, occupying the first 4 floors of this 8 story building.  Bacon Lane Architect LLC was retained by Morgan Reed to provide architecture and interior design services for the Landlord’s common areas which include the lobby, restroom and shared corridors. This tenant improvement project is a continuation of services provided to Morgan Reed to transform this iconic structure to a premier office and research facility in the North States metro area.

The office interior design design concepts proposed by Bacon Lane Architect LLC utilize natural materials and earth tone finishes.  This approach provides a timeless and inviting environment suitable for a variety of tenants which may occupy this facility.

The Bacon Lane Architect LLC team also worked the owner in 2012 to develop preliminary renovation concepts to attract future tenants for the office space.

Bacon Lane Architect LLC had the honor of working with Iain Chisholm and team to provide tenant improvements for DADA Art Bar, a new restaurant, bar and art gallery in an existing commercial “vanilla box” space. The client had very clear desires and expectations for the project.

The core concept for the DADA Art Bar was to have a continuous stream of fresh local artwork displayed in the space as a focus for conversation as well as a backdrop to enjoy a cold plate and glass of wine. The wine bar was designed to have two main areas. The front most public area was designed to offer casual and comfortable seating to relax and sip. Towards the back, a semi-private space was designed to be an open gallery, and is available for private events.

NOTE: This venue is now permanently closed.

Bacon Lane Architect LLC provided architectural engineering and Planning Department submission coordination services for the redevelopment of this 1.35 acre site and building situated at the north east corner of East Colfax Ave. and Moline Street. This project was funded in part by the Aurora Community Development Department and is part of the Colfax Mainstreet Overlay District.

Azteca Ranch Market is the primary tenant at this Caleb Investment & Management, Inc. location. The property was desperately in need of building and site improvements to meet current zoning requirements and improve business customer traffic.

This design embraces the use of durable economical metallic metal panels and detailing to complement the required Colfax Ave. Design Standards and Roadside District color pallette.  A large dynamic architectural design feature was incorporated at the building’s most visible corner, in addition to raising the parapet along the E. Colfax Ave. to improve the tenant’s visibility and the building’s stature.

Landscaping is maximized along both street frontages. Colfax Ave. landscaping includes new street trees, a ten foot wide pedestrian sidewalk and raised planters to safely separate pedestrians and screen parking and drive areas.

NOTE: This business is now permanently closed.

Skagit Valley Publishing’s main publication, The Skagit Valley Herald, previously occupied two separate buildings, thus splitting their editorial staff from the main building which contained both production and the remaining business functions. Both buildings were also at their maximum capacity and lacked the potential to expand laterally or vertically.

A decision was made to relocate the existing operation to a new 53,000 square foot facility on a greenfield site of approximately 8 acres. Bacon Lane Architect LLC provided full architecture and engineering services. They also assisted with significant site challenges due to on-site water and the need for wetland mitigation.

Key building concepts which guided the design were:

  • The owner’s desire to consolidate the operation and provide open space plans conducive to employee interaction and flexibility
  • Extensive use of natural light
  • Explore innovative building systems, to economize cost

The new facility allowed the Skagit Valley Publishing organization to relocate two of its weekly publications and the commercial print operation along with the main Skagit Valley Herald Publication.

Straus Newspapers, located in south central NY State owns and publishes a group of nine weekly community newspapers.  All production and distribution is outsourced to a nearby commercial printer.  This outsourcing allows Straus Newspapers to concentrate on growing their business and improving front end operations.

Straus Newspapers utilized Bacon Lane Architect LLC’ experience in the design and planning of front end newspaper office environments to redesign their offices.  Open interdepartmental communication was a key project goal which resulted in the design of low partition height work stations, open offices and a central pagination hub.  This central circular hub became the focus of the design with custom cabinets, shared pagination tables and varied ceiling heights.

Interior design detailing and finishes selection set this project apart from a typical office environment.  Bacon Lane Architect LLC consistently applies new contemporary design techniques with proven industry specific work flow requirements to provide each client with an exciting and unique solution.

Bacon Lane Architect LLC was contracted to guide the design, engineering and construction administration for the interior remodel and equipment conversion for a portion of Jeppesen’s Print-on-Demand production facility. Jeppesen selected Bacon Lane Architect LLC because of their print industry expertise.  The facility has the environmental concerns of a data center, and the process flow requirements of a manufacturing facility.  The environmental and clean requirements needed to be balanced against the equipment access and material flow.

The project involved the replacement of three digital Print-on-Demand web presses, with three new next generation digital web presses, within the confines of the same space as the original three presses. This process required multi-phase designs to kick off construction as well as multiphase construction to allow adequate print capacity at all phases of the project.

Implementation of this project relied on a fast track process requiring completed documents to be released for permit within 5 weeks of notice to proceed.  This operational critical facility maintained continued production through all phases of construction while interior space and infrastructure systems were modified to support both the existing equipment being removed and the new equipment being installed.

Finally the time critical nature of the product production demanded the evaluation of and augmentation to existing mechanical and electrical systems to provide multiple levels of systems redundancy while continuing to serve existing equipment.

Other notable design challenges included:

  • Phased Construction
  • Environmental requirements of equipment
  • Low tolerance for impacts to existing production operations
  • Spatial constraints of space
  • Square footage of existing spaces
