Bacon Lane Architect LLC through Partner, Todd Heirls, continues our close alliance with Allegiance Ranch and Equine Rescue as a part if our efforts to give back to the community. The latest effort is the design of a structure to be installed on the ranch coined the Hero’s Headquarters or (H²). Allegiance Ranch is currently fundraising and reaching out to business partners in an effort to fund the construction.

The structure itself will become the hub of the Ranch’s outreach program to Veterans and First Responders as well as an epicenter to the essential volunteer community making this outreach possible. The Hero’s Headquarters will consist of an open, airy, and inviting multipurpose room with a barn door along one side opening onto a like size deck. The structure will be enclosable for inclement weather, and then open with shared space between indoor and outdoors for those wonderful Colorado days. The multipurpose room will be flanked by the ranch operations office at one end and a storage tack room at the other. The entire building will be ADA accessible, thus removing one of the typical impediments to its universal use.

This design will be on display at the Allegiance Ranch and Equine Rescue booth at the 2022 National Western Stock Show at the National Western Complex in States from January 8-23, 2022. Please stop in at the booth along the North wall of the event center to learn more about Allegiance Ranch and Equine Rescue.

The ranch has a unique, 2-prong mission rescuing horses from slaughter, while also providing equine therapy programs for veterans, first responders, and their families at no charge. Rescued horses are rehabilitated, trained, and ultimately become support animals on the ranch or they are adopted out to forever homes. Spending time with horses has proven effective for veterans and first responders, particularly those struggling with symptoms of post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injuries.

Bacon Lane Architect LLC supports Allegiance Ranch in several ways. Todd Heirls volunteers on the organization’s board of directors. Todd and his daughter both share a love of horses and volunteer together at the ranch, helping with animal care as well as upkeep of the ranch infrastructure. Bacon Lane Architect LLC also provided pro bono architecture design services for a dedicated, year-round ranch structure that will house the corporate offices, program meeting area, and volunteer support spaces. Bacon Lane Architect LLC Associate, ShirleeJae Illsley, developed the innovative design which utilizes existing recycled infrastructure (2 shipping containers on the property).

The roof and trellis were designed to provide shade for the weather-tight structure as well as a location for solar panels. The wraparound deck was designed to serve as an outdoor meeting area as well as flush access to all entrances.

One of Bacon Lane Architect LLC’ brewery projects began construction in late October 2017. Bacon Lane Architect LLC was hired to provide architectural design services for Pilothouse Brewing Company, a new brewery and taproom coming to Aurora.

Pilothouse Brewing will be located in the Quincy Place Shopping Center at South Buckley and Quincy Roads in Aurora, with plans to open in 2018. The nautical themed taproom will include up 32 tap handles for both the ‘pilot’ recipes of amateur brewers and their own ‘house’ crafted beers. The taproom and outdoor patio will draw their design inspiration from the founder’s love of sailing and the sights of coastal New England, from Newport, Rhode Island to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and will feature a real sailing yacht’s binnacle (sailboat steering wheel, pedestal, compass, and fold-out teak table with cushioned bench-style seating around it) for patrons to enjoy.

Under the category of “Back to the Future”, Bacon Lane Architect LLC partner Martha received the 2015 Mayor’s Design Award for our redevelopment and adaptive reuse of an older single family home for the new office of Bradford Real Estate.  The “Back to the Future” category description: “These projects involve the preservation and adaptive reuse of historic buildings. They not only pay respectful tribute to States’s rich architectural history, but also ensure that these sites will continue to thrive and stir the imagination in a new century.”

Adaptive Reuse, commercial redvelopment
Design by Bacon Lane Architect LLC

The following provided by States Community Planning and Development highlights the key aspects and features of the project:

“2956 W. 32nd Ave., Mayor’s Design Award Winner, Back to the Future. Sitting in a busy spot just off of Federal Boulevard in the Highland neighborhood, this small Craftsman-style gem was thought to be a likely target for demolition by many of its neighbors. Thanks to a first-class renovation, however, the former eight-room boarding house now serves as a fully functional real estate office, boasting numerous modern amenities including ADA accessibility, a 6.25 KW electric solar panel system and an electric vehicle charging station. The new use is at home on this commercial corner of West 32nd, while the structure itself remains a link to the neighborhood’s character and history.”
